Solar Power Florida Incentives
Why isn’t there more Solar Power in Florida?
Seriously, with over 361 days of sunshine per year, why isn’t there more Solar Power in Florida? Hurricanes are obviously the biggest hurdle but flying solar panels haven’t caused major issues in recent years and the latest panels are strong enough to withstand the strongest hurricanes. So, what’s the hold-up — politicians not giving tax breaks/incentives to solar companies (and lining the pockets of the major state utility company instead)?
There are two buildings fully powered by solar panels about 5 minutes from my house here in northern Florida. I believe both are doctors offices.
Here’s some pictures; the one on the top right is one of the ones I was referring to, the other pictures are some other buildings in my city: http://www.ecs-solar.com/solar_electric_power.htm
But yes, as other people pointed out the main reason solar is not more widely used is that it is more expensive–just a few years ago its only practical use was in high tech satellites. It just can’t compete with coal in terms of cost, no matter how much sunshine you have.
